When I do this, it just returns to the command prompt. No errors listed. I know there are files in that directory that contain my search string. What am I doing wrong?

I take it you mean you return to the QSH command prompt? In other
words, no errors, but also no search hits, and the system is ready for
the next QSH command.

Forgive the basic nature of the questions, but
(1) You do realize the search string is case-sensitive, right?
(2) You are *absolutely sure* you are in the right directory, and that
there are files in there that contain your search string?

Less basic:
Maybe there is an encoding (CCSID) issue?
