yes. That is what I am doing. Using ASMI to change the IP address of
the ETH0 and ETH1 ports. Then I am guessing I use CRTLINETH and
ADDTCPIFC to set the IP address of the system to the IP of the LAN
port.

Jerry,

I think you're confusing commands like ADDTCPIFC, and other stuff
available on the CFGTCP menu. What Steve is trying to change is more
stuff that can be changed before you even load IBM i onto the system.
Could this be? Or are you trying to say something else? Like that even
the ASMI stuff has routes and whatnot that need to be changed also?

Maybe because it's active, has defined routes?

why would I not be able to change the ip address of the ETH1 port on a
720 ?

I am logged into ASMI from a browser. Using the admin profile. I go to
network config. Check "config this interface" on the eth1 port. Change
type ip address to "static". Change the ip address from 169,254,3,147
to 192.168.1.170. Click continue and ok. The browser says the change
is accepted.

But I go and display the network config again and none of the changes
took. Use option 30 on the front panel and the IP address has not
changed. I also tried to make the change after powering down the
system.

thanks,

-Steve
