Wrong procedure. Yes you will need to purchase new batteries if you do this. I'm not even sure if this will work as the card will want to write to the dead drive and we already have that problem.

IPL to DST (can't do this from SST)

Work with Disk Units
Work with Disk Unit Recovery
Reclaim IOA cache storage

It will warn and complain and clear the cache and require an IPL.

I suspect this will solve the problem as there will no longer be data in the cache for the thing to want to write to the drive.

I would note that having a full system save prior to doing this is prudent. :-)
