What is it attached to? For example, let's say it is TAP04. You do a
WRKHDWRSC *STG and you see something like:
Resource Type-model Status Text
CMB09 57B8-001 Operational Storage Controller
DC06 57B8-001 Operational Storage Controller
CMB04 268C-001 Operational Storage Controller
DC08 6B02-001 Operational Storage Controller
CMB10 57B7-001 Operational Storage Controller
DC09 57B7-001 Operational Storage Controller
CMB03 2844-001 Operational Storage Controller
DC07 571A-001 Operational Storage Controller

You take a guess that it may be under DC07 so you try
9=Work with resource
on that. You get:
Resource Type-model Status Text
DC07 571A-001 Operational Storage Controller
TAP06 3580-003 Operational Tape Unit
Score!
And you find out that this controller does not control any disk drives
also. Double Score!! So then you try 7=Display resource detail on DC07.
You get something like: U0588.001.012EF8C-CB1-C02
So you try STRSST, log in, 1. Start a service tool, 7. Hardware service
manager, 1. Packaging hardware resources (systems, frames, cards,...),
and you see:
Type- Resource
Description Model Unit ID Name
System 8203-E4A U8203.E4A.10813C5 SYS01
Disk Expansion Unit + 5886-001 U5886.001.P857147 FR06
System Unit + 789C-001 U789C.001.DQD0P72 FR08
System Expansion Unit + 0595-001 U0595.001.11340A2 FR02
System Expansion Unit + 0595-001 U0595.001.13230A8 FR05
System Expansion Unit + 0588-001 U0588.001.012EF8C FR04
System Expansion Unit + 0595-001 U0595.001.104855C FR03

On on the U0588.001.012EF8C you use 9=Hardware contained within package.
And you get:
Type- Resource
Description Model Name Location
System Expansion Unit 0588-001 FR04
Backplane 28B8 P05 CB1
Combined Function IOP 2844-001 P23 CB1-C01
Storage IOA 571A-001 P14 CB1-C02
...
On the 571A you try 3=Concurrent maintenance. You use 2=Toggle identify
indicator state, to verify that you have the right card. You see the
light flashing on the back of the card. So you use 2 to toggle it back
off and the light turns off. So now you try F9=Power off domain and when
that is done you try F10=Power on domain.

In effect you have just reset your controller card without having to IPL
your system. Do NOT do this if it controls disk drives. Make sure you
have the device varied off first.

I had some tape drives which required this application on occasion.
