Thanks Pete. We are doing the research that you are suggesting. We've gone
over the OS documents from IBM and have done an initial ANZOBJCVN. I got the
email about your webinar yesterday and we're going to be watching that.
I'm just looking for additional outside points of view to see if we've missed
something. Our reseller just doesn't seem to be offering us a whole lot of info
without being poked.

Subject: RE: Looking at Power 7
You have to go to at least 6.1 of the OS, with 6.1.1 of the SLIC. While the
upgrade from 6.1 to 7.1 is extremely easy compared to 5.4 to 6.1 (the
upgrade is easy, it’s the preparation with ANZOBJCVN that makes it a little
difficult). Let me give you a few things you should have investigated
before you decide, there are others and that is why you read the memo to
users, and upgrade/installation guide. You will need to determine if you
are running WAS 6.0, then you have to upgrade first to WAS 6.1 to get to IBM
i 7.1, or you stay with WAS 6.0 and go with IBM i 6.1. If you are running
Domino which version are you running as some work with 6.1 and 7.1, others
just work with 5.4, or with just 6.1. Do you use JAVA, which JDK are you
using? There are different JDKs with each release of IBM i, and some JDKs
aren't supported at 7.1, but were there at 6.1 and/or 5.4.
In addition to knowing "what questions should I be asking my resellers",
have you done your homework to know the dependencies that each release
requires, and how those interact with your current environment? You just
don't go to a release because someone on this list recommends it, as they
have done their homework for their environment and made sure they checked
out the issues for their environment, but not yours. This isn't a negative
comment on you Cole, this is a comment to everyone that says they are on 7.1
and you should be there as well. Yes, I agree that everyone *should* be on
the latest release, but only after you have checked the requirements,
constraints, and other issues that all the releases have within them.
Homework and preparation are the key to insure that your upgrade goes
smoothly.
IBM has asked me to join them on Tuesday February 8th at 2:00pm EST
in creating a webinar which discusses moving up to Power7 and IBM i 7.1 It
will have Guy Paradise, WW Marketing Manager IBM i, Mark Olson WW Product
manager Power System (Mr. Hardware), Steve Will Chief Architect IBM i, and
myself (I have probably done more IBM i upgrades than anyone else in the
world). Here is the link for the webinar if you are interested.

We're in the process of looking at a new Power 7. The question we have is
which
OS to go to. We're at V5R4M0, do we go to 6.1 or make the leap to 7.1?
Also what questions should we be asking our reseller?
