You should check out SAP note 1409608 before going to VMWare
with your eyes wide open to the exposures as documented by SAP.

As with the other things already mentioned, none of these are issues
on Power/i. We virtualize just fine with subsystems, PowerVM,
shared proc pool. No significant overhead, no IO concerns, no
SAP support limitations.

Some SAP customers leave Windows for i, but yes, it's a
significant effort to change platforms (and can be a tough to
swallow for whoever made the initial platform decision).
