Let me add my voice to those who say "SQL and ILE".

Embedded SQL, in particular, is hugely powerful -- you can very easily write reports that users can (via a front end) apply custom sorts and filters to. You can do the same thing with subfiles, although speed can sometimes be an issue (but that's when
you start learning about SQL performance, right? :-). And it's not that hard to learn to do simple things (iSeries Navigator's Run SQL Script is really handy) and work your way up. The best part is that you can search the archives of this site for
examples: I "wrote" my first embedded SQL code here by literally copying and pasting examples from this list into my programs and then editing them as necessary. There are also lots of articles (many by posters here) elsewhere on the web.

The point is, you're not going to be an expert overnight, but if you start doing things step by step you'll look back after six months and be amazed at how far you've come.
