Yes, the host has to be available for the guested partitions to run. On
my 9408-M25 the original only lpar was GDI. This is a test lpar, which I
have permission to IPL at a whim - midday. The boss would not let that be
the hosting lpar when we wanted to add other lpars. So I had to back it
off to tape. Create a new hosting lpar (MAIL3). Put GDI on as a guested
lpar. And later added another guested lpar.
So, it's like a return to the 8xx model of lparing, only without any of
the hardware requirements of that generation.
And if you only have one tape drive and have to share it between three
lpars that can stretch out your downtime of the two guested lpars. You
can still leave the primary running while the others get backed up. Since
I run a RCLSTG before the backup I start the backup on the guested lpar
which finishes it's RCLSTG first.
