What is one's restore plan with SAVCHGOBJ?

Scenario 1: Hosed up file A in library B.
Check out the last save date. Use media from that time period.

Yes, if only file A got hosed there is no need to restore anything from the last full save. If it's a multi-member file then you might need to check whether the damaged member had changed and was therefore on the SAVCHGOBJ media, otherwise it will be on the last full save.

Scenario 2: Have to restore an entire library.
Restore from GO SAVE 21. Restore from every daily SAVCHGOBJ starting with
oldest to newest?

SAVCHGOBJ operations are cumulative so you only need the latest in the sequence thus RSTLIB from last full save then restore changes from latest SAVCHGOBJ media.

We briefly looked at SAVCHGOBJ. We decided that
A - It complicated a restore.
B - So many things are changed daily that it really didn't save us much
time. For example, let's say the biggest items in your file library are
the item master, item history, sales history, customer order and customer
order line file. Can anyone imagine a "going concern" not having those
changed on a daily basis?

While it is true that primary application files are both large and change daily there is much other stuff on the system that does not change so frequently. Much time can be saved my omitting those things from a daily save strategy although doing so complicates the restore somewhat.

However, I ran a little sql. Apparently 85% (by size) of our objects are
not changed daily. And that's just in our file library for BPCS.

So how much time would be saved by not having to save 85% of your system each night? Doesn't save work faster on fewer large objects than many small objects?

Also, if you have journalling active then SAVCHGOBJ can save the journals and receivers instead of the file members. This can significantly decrease the save time but will of course add complexity and time to the restore while you reapply the journal changes.

Simon Coulter.
