Paul,
Thanks for all the information. I will check out Chapter 9 and make a check off list.

Subject: RE: Questions on V5R4M5 Upgrade

It's not a terribly complex job, but it's a bit more involved than a round of PTFs. You will be replacing the microcode and 'selected pieces' of the OS; you're deeper into the machinery!

You need 3 CDs: iBase + OS/01 + OS/02.
You will also need the latest cumulative package + hipers + your favorite groups.
There are also 'stray' PTFs that will make your 5-4-5 upgrade experience more rewarding. The documentation points you to them.

The document you want is Chapter 9 of "System I: i5/OS and related
software- Installing, upgrading, or deleting i5/OS and related software"
(SC41-5120-10)
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v6r1m0/topic/rzahc/sc41
5120.pdf

The most difficult part is making sure you have a complete Option21 backup (preferably 2) of everything you own. If you're like us, getting a large enough window to make the backup is the tricky part!

The procedure in the manual only has you update with the '999' and 'SS1'
PTFs. We scheduled a complete round of PTFs the month after the upgrade. If you have the time, you could do it the same weekend.

I don't know if there are any issues in applying all PTFs instead of just the 999+SS1s.
