of a program sending a message to be displayed on the UIM panel
(such as "search criteria not found," "list has been printed,"
et cetera?

I apologize that my example message threw you off. I don't need an
empty-list message in this case. I need to have an arbitrary message that
is determined by the program that calls the UIM programs. I saw discussion
of "Handling messages" in the UIM APIs reference (section "Using the User
Interface Manager (UIM) Exit Programs." But that seems to be focused on
exit program messages (which would presumably cause the message display by
sending a message to their caller). I don't see discussion of how to cause
UIM to display arbitrary messages that are not sent from exit programs.
That's what I seek.
