I wonder, what with a connection to an f-spec, whether the format name will be a part of what is passed. And maybe indicators CAN be a part of this - I've not gone to the extent of dealing with how indicators are stored - probably in some buffer. I've mostly dealt with data files, not display or printer files - when working with input/output buffers.

Hmm - what to do with indicator data structures!!

I don't know how these work. Maybe there's some environment parameters that are inherit. Maybe they have to check the call stack. For example if your program is called by some CGI job then it knows to use that and so on.
