Paul,
When you do a GO PTF, take option 8. On the Prompt for media
question, change it from a 1 to a 2. Then you can load the Cumulative, and
all the Groups in one step. When it is done with the first set of PTFs, it
will ask for another set, if there is another set, put it in the CD and
enter a G. Now, if you have a bunch of drives on your machine, it would
even be quicker if you made an Image Catalogue for the PTFS. The disk will
be much quicker than the CD during the load.
You are doing something with the job tables as your original post
said you were compressing them. Compress job tables should be *NONE and
Check job tables should be *ABNORMAL. You don't want to be doing any of
these during a small window upgrade.

Pete--
Thanks for your message.
We will most certainly apply the existing PTFs ahead of time for our
2nd machine!
We aren't compressing job tables-- but I wasn't sure if compressing
the tables would speed things up-- but I'm also sure that cleaning
jobs out of the system will be more effective.
After the install of the microcode + OS/400, the system wakes up on
Side "A," so we can load the first set of PTFs, and they are applied
directly to side "B." When I tried to add additional PTFs, the
system warned that if there were interdependencies all of the PTFs
might not be correctly installed-- and recommended an IPL first.
I think we have the latest version of the software-- it's a fresh
shipment of I_BASE + Parts 1 and 2 of OS/400.

Paul,
First, do a APYPTF *ALL *PERM *IMMDLY like now, so you don't do this
anytime near the upgrade.
Second, why are you compressing job tables? Change that value to
*NONE on the ChGIPLA screen now. You might want to set your QTOTJOB and
QACTJOB to values close to number of jobs in WRKSYSSTS and WRKACTJOB
respectively. Then Compress the job tables in a prior IPL to reduce that
number.
You can apply the Cumulative, individual PTFs, and any other group
you want together just change from a 1 to a 2 on the GO PTF option 8
screen.
Do you have the latest version of the I_BASE cd for V5R4M5?
Now there is a quicker way, and that is to create your own install
images with the PTF's already applied using GO LICPGM option 40. But you
need to examine that, and is more than I want to write in length about.
