If Oracle were to cripple MySQL someone else would simply
uncripple it and distribute it - the GPL gaurantees this right.

Technically, Sun (Oracle) could create a closed-source version for their exclusive use. As the copyright holder, their rights exceed the GPL. They're not bound by the license. But anyone could "fork" the open-source version. Which is what some of the original MySQL developers are doing, after terminating their employment with Sun:
