5722ST1 gives you
- STRQM: A front end to QMQQRYs and QMFORMs. You can build these without
STRQM but you may prefer the tool.
- STRSQL: A 5250 version of the freebie iNav's Run SQL Scripts. Uses
limited prompting versus iNav's templates. Often, I do prefer the
prompting over the templates. BUT, do not let STRSQL be the only way you
learn SQL. The limited prompting support WILL hold you back.
- Embedded sql in HLL programs like RPG and COBOL. The alternative is to
use Call Level Interface or CLI. There's some comparison of the two at:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r4/topic/cli/rzadpdifferences.htm
One important thing left out is that CLI supports reading result sets
while embedded SQL does not.
May feel that embedded is faster to bang out. I'm in this camp.
Some feel that if you've done any odbc work in visual basic, etc, then you
will find CLI very similar.
The "Sorcerer's" redbook on RPG covers CLI also.
For a sample of embedded SQL see:

Granted, it may confuse those who have not done any subprocedures, used
free format RPG, or basically have learned nothing new in RPG over the
last 10 years or so. It could be updated as the os now supports SQL in
free format also.
We use canned software. But we also have over 1,500 SQLRPG* type source
members.
