Of course if SQL pre-compiling is not also desired [because it would be used], then buying ST1 is an added expense that might not be justified, merely to obtain some green-screen query tooling. There should be plenty of other ways to get query reporting capabilities, green screen or otherwise, without having to buy the precompiler support from IBM. Access via ODBC and JDBC are not added cost, and if the CIO likes web/PC, then they may already have products that do reports from a PC or browser.

if you stress the importance of the SQL tool for researching/troubleshooting and reporting even with only a web/PC background they should appreciate the abilities and power of SQL.
just "soft sell" the idea. even with the stingiest customers i've
dealt with if they understand that you can't fully utilize SQL they
know enough about the power and usefulness of the tool and i've never
failed to have the product purchased. and i couldn't sell ice water
in hell...

We are short on pgmr utilities here. Current [and previous] CIO is
Web/PC - no IBM experience that I know of. We have a good sized IT
staff, but only 6 of us who program on the 400. One of us has been
pretty vocal lately with the new CIO hoping to get us current with
releases, utilities, etc. I don't know how much luck he's had.

I'll just plod along so I can get some tools 'my users' desperately
need - quickly - that is presentable to them and acceptable from my
supv's standpoint. <<SNIP>>
