Why not do multiple formats? Generating XML or PDF does not preclude
generating a standard print. Keep standard output for those that want to
print, and XML or downloadable format for those who want to analyze.

A weak case. It's a wonderful idea to drag users kicking and screaming
into the 90s, but some folks still want their reports. I support
customers, not ideals.

a case can be made that spooled files and output queues are outdated
in the age of PDF and XML files. Users want to do a lot more with
their spooled output than just print it. PDF can be printed
anywhere.
Users want to extract data from their reports and import into a
spreadsheet. XML is better for that purpose than i5/OS spooled files.
