Don't know, but this should work....

with t1 as (
SELECT substr(digits(CLIENT_number),1,5) as corp
, Balance
FROM qtemp.clfile
)
select corp, sum(Balance) as BalanceSum
from t1
group by corp
order by BalanceSum desc
fetch first 25 rows only

But the devil is in the details.

Why can I do this:
SELECT
substr(digits(CLIENT_number),1,5) as corp,
sum(Balance) as BalanceSum
FROM
qtemp.clfile
GROUP BY substr(digits(CLIENT_number),1,5)
ORDER by substr(digits(CLIENT_number),1,5)

But this
with t1 as (
SELECT
substr(digits(CLIENT_number),1,5) as corp,
sum(Balance) as BalanceSum
FROM
qtemp.clfile
GROUP BY substr(digits(CLIENT_number),1,5)
ORDER by substr(digits(CLIENT_number),1,5)
)
select corp, BalanceSum
from t1
order by BalanceSum desc
fetch first 25 rows only

Tells me that
SQL0122-Column CLIENT_NUMBER or expression in SELECT list not valid.

Wrap digits around the field name before doing a substring.

SUBSTRING(DIGITS(field),1,5)...

Hmmm..

That's an issue...can I use a "format" type keyword so that:

00618014 will be 00618 not 61801
00618021 will be 00618 not 61802

Tim,

Is that number truly numeric? I did create a test file and used that.
And
the statement worked. Frankly I was a tad surprised that I could
substr
a
numeric

You do realize that
123456
12345678
123457
Will all appear as CORP 12345. But a plain 1234 will appear as a new
CORP

If that's what you wanted then that's pretty cool.
