year, or lost their Inbox and not their Sent mail, those are
particularly scary.
Heck, even if it was user error, you'd think that Google would have
backups to prevent this sort of thing. Something like a transparent
recycle bin that would hold deleted messages for 30 days to avoid
"whoops" moments.

If you read through the posts at the end of the article one of them
mentions that the missing messages usually show up again after a few
days. Not optimal, but it sounds like the loss isn't permanent.
