You're right...I should have said hardware vendor linked. Windows and
Linux run on a bunch of different vendor hardware. Windows and Linux
on Dell/HP/Gateway/blah. Whereas OS/X runs on Apple hardware and i5/OS
runs on IBM hardware.

Michael,

Aren't all operating systems hardware linked? I recall that, when Apple
moved to Intel from Motorola, the Apple OS had to be re-written.
Windows is Intel specific; when it runs on other platforms, it runs
under an emulator specific to that platform. Same for Linux, I think.

I'm open for correction if this isn't true either as a general rule, or
excepted in some cases.

Well. certainly with the hardware being essentially the same between
System i and System p (is that family name correct?), the OS is the
differentiator. Of course, we're the only ones that know that. Even
though the System i family can run multiple, different OSes, we
primarily run i5/OS. That's why we buy an i5. It doesn't make
financial sense to buy the hardware to run any other OS as a primary
OS. That being said, you can still only run i5/OS on one type of
hardware, so they're still linked. Naming by OS makes sense when you
can run the OS on different hardware. We can't do that with i5/OS.

I still remember an article I read (PC Week at the time) when W2K debuted.

The author chastised MS for releasing a known buggy system saying, "If MS
ever learns to write operating systems like IBM does for the AS/400 [his
word, not mine], it might be on to something."

I think you might be on to something Jerry! Maybe we need to get some
authors familiar with i5OS to infiltrate the ranks of high-profile trade
rags and start writing articles that are truthful to what the best machines
are out there. Of course the article topics would have to be about silly
things with phrases like "Microsoft ... Enterprise" (those two words don't
belong in the same sentence), but in the article content we could make sure
the world knew what the best OS/language/DB was!! Us RPG people is so
sneaky! ;-)

Maybe I made my coffee a little strong this morning... :-)

BTW, rocking out to http://www.purevolume.com/scenesfromamovie this morning.
