I'm aware of the save outq capability and losing the spool files is not a show stopper

One of the points of difference I mentioned between the options was losing spool files but I was evaluating what options would/might make a straightforward hardware upgrade easier and/or simpler. Adding an unnecessary V5R4 upgrade into the mix doesn't help that and being able to save spool files during a disk upgrade (probably) wouldn't justify installing V5R4 all by itself.
