How could you possibly check that it's a valid GUID?

All the GUID is is a 16 byte number, right?  Conceivably, everything
from x'00000000000000000000000000000000' to
x'FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF' is valid.

Actually this is a Guid coming from external systems (both 
Java and .NET
Guids will be involved here) and they're being used as 
foreign keys. I'm
thinking the right type is a char(16) for bit data, but then I need to
do the translation from the Guid to the byte array myself. 
Char(36) lets
me just store the guid, but there's no checking that it's a 
valid guid.
