Loyd,

I have good success by activating the OS400 POP server and then routing SMTP
mail through the System i itself. I don't think there is any POP configuration
you need to do for outbound email. Just change the Mail router in CHGSMTPA to
point to yourself and it should work. You should, as a matter of course,
restrict email relay within the OS400 SMTP server. This can also be done from
the CHGSMTPA parameters.

Good luck.

Thanks, Chris.

We currently run our own Exchange server in our facility. We currently do as
you suggest, and allow relaying from the iSeries. However, the corporate
directive is to consolidate to centralized Exchange. There's an analysis of
applications and systems using/requiring relay to determine impact of
turning off relay, requiring SMTP authentication, or allowing relay.

I'm afraid many packages as well as systems, are not "RFC compliant"
regarding SMTP authentication. The major systems we use are various iSeries
applications (as well as the built-in MSF), Kronos Workforce Central, and
Altiris. All these are used by several facilities so changing relay will
impact all facilities' installations.

There is no way to add a logon for the SMTP server to relay to your
Exchange server. How ever you can set up your exchange server to allow
relay from the IP address of your iSeries.
