I have found two shops recently that initialized every tape IBMIRD.
Curiously they were both in the S/36 Environment.

Good ideal Al. We started using a unique ID for each volume a few years
back. (Does anyone still use IBMIRD?) And we incorporated a PRTERRLOG
*VOLSTAT at the end of every backup.

Re: CHKTAP?

There are never any guarantees that you will be able to use a tape.

INZTAP CLEAR(*YES) gives you some sort of a clue, but no guarantee.

Your best bet is to uniquely initialize each tape, and initialize only
once
or with the same NEWVOL parameter each time.

You can then run DSPERRLOG *VOLSTAT for that tape, and see if the number
of
errors is high.

Folks.

Does anyone know of a command that can be executed that will check to see
if
a tape can be read properly all the way through. I had a media error, and
I
want to ensure that the tape can actually be read if needed. I thought
that
the CHKTAP command did that, but after reading the description of the
command's help text, I'm not sure if this command will actually try to
read
all of the tape.

Thanks, Larry
