I agree with that method. I have just found out that we are not keeping 'unique' vol id;s associated with our tapes. They get initialized over periods of time with different vol id's. I will be changing this shortly! There are never any guarantees that you will be able to use a tape. INZTAP CLEAR(*YES) gives you some sort of a clue, but no guarantee. Your best bet is to uniquely initialize each tape, and initialize only once or with the same NEWVOL parameter each time. You can then run DSPERRLOG *VOLSTAT for that tape, and see if the number of errors is high.
