Or you can download the fully functional, free Eclipse IDE and use it to
write, test and deploy a thick client that runs on ANY operating system, as
opposed to .NET applications which won't even run on a Windows machine
unless you have the .NET framework installed (and of course won't run on any
non-Windows machines).  You can get the IBM Java toolkit (JTOpen) which has
far more functionality for accessing iSeries objects than any .NET
interface.

Don't get me wrong, Visual Studio is an okay editor, but there's really
nothing in it that makes it leaps and bounds above Eclipse.  On the other
hand, the documentation for the Java runtime makes the .NET 2.0
documentation look dismal.  As an illustration, try to find decent example
code for the Ping class.
