But a program that runs on one version of Windows won't necessarily run on
another.  And God help you if you get the wrong version of Windows and it
doesn't have the driver for your hardware; you're out of luck.

If I write a program in .NET, it won't run on all of those Windows machines.
In fact, it won't run on any of them until the .NET framework is installed.
And even if I have source, it doesn't help.  My VB program won't compile in
Visual Studio .NET; the syntax differences between VB and VB.NET are
enormous (I learned about THAT the hard way).

Say what you will, but the name changes on the IBM midrange line actually
give you a sense of the progress in the language, whereas the LACK of name
changes in the Windows world is very misleading.
