If you repeat a lie a lot, people will eventualy belive it. I think it was Adolf who wrote that before WWW II.
Bill applies the principle.

The "user-friendliness" of microsoft applications is a clear example of a lie that fooled lots of people, as you can prove it by exposing a "fresh" user to a windows machine, as often happens in an undeveloped country.

In the states, most people had already learn (hard way) how to use windows, and now it is easy for them, the people that don't know how to use windows, have already heard so many times that it is intuitive that they are afraid to be taken by an idiot if they confess not to be able to use the computer.

What Microsoft researches, and does very well, is to study their users and
make the applications user-friendly. They respond better than most
companies to user actions. MS studies how people use their products, and
gears their designs to be more intuitive. MS is one of the first companies
to make products that don't need a manual in order for a user to be able to
use the product.

This is not innovation, like inventing hardware, but it is important, and MS
does it better than anyone.

Jon,

Not that I'm disagreeing with you about your feelings toward Microsoft,
but I don't know if I would go as far as saying that everything they did
was copied or stolen. They have done plenty of research and development.
Surely you would count some of these as innovations:

OK Steve - I can't resist. Name a Microsoft innovation. Apart from Bob
