Marty:

"...the iSeries can read them" using which interfaces? WRKLNK? EDTF? DSPOPT? 
iSeries Navigator through /QOPT? other?

The point is that there are different ways of 'reading' CDs on an iSeries. Some 
are iSeries-specific, others are more PC-like. Depending on how a CD is burnt, 
an iSeries might be able to read it one way but fail another.

What works and what doesn't? That may help isolate your problem.
