Insertions in_line

Jeanne ===>"I know this isn't strictly a Mapics issue, "

Al ====> This also comes up in BPCS and other packages.

Peter ===>Do not worry, I am switching the message to the midrange list
now.

Jeanne ===>"...how can I monitor a user's activities on our AS/400? There has to be some IBM tools to do this."
Peter ===> Well, they are a couple but all depends what specifically do
you want to monitor: file updates, menus used, programs used, etc.

Al ====> There are two realities to consider.
1. What are people doing RIGHT NOW (the AS/400 seems to be sluggish, or we want to do some update, which we know should not be done when other people are doing certain functions) 2. What did some people do, before they did a normal sign-off, so there is no joblog to try to figure out. (now we are being told about "some error message" that the user failed to screen print, or jot down any details when it happened, or something is messed up and we not have a clue)

In the first reality, there are add-ons to AS/400 iSeries to provide IT-friendly support functions similar to what used to be on the S/36, that IBM in its ultimate wisdom took away from us when merging aspects of S/36 and S/38

consider:
http://www.precosis.com.au/rv1.htm Remote View
http://www.precosis.com.au/piu1.htm Stack Analyser
http://www.precosis.com.au/wsa1.htm identify & fix system hogs

For the second reality, there are tools to help manage the logging.

Depending on how recently some problem occurred
Check WRKSBSJOB QINTER to see if the sign on session is now discontinued, unless they were signed on at the main console, because WRKACTJOB only shows what is still active ... you can check the log on a discontinued job until hit the WRKSYSVAL ceiling on how long to keep it

Let's suppose what you want to find out is who changed the price, and when they changed it (how much of the product went out with the wrong price), or who changed the address, then changed it back, so the checks were written to the wrong person (embezzlement), well perhaps you want something like UPI's http://www.unbeatenpathintl.com/award/source/1.html

MAPICS
1) If you are using MAPICS and want to monitor the files, there is in CAS
the Journal Management part of it. If you want to do this but on inhouse
files, you can set your own journal(s) and read them.

2) If you want to see the Application Log activity, go to the REPORT section in CAS and run the
Application Log Report.

OUTSIDE OF MAPICS
1) Journals
2) Job Logs

That is what I can think of... Need more coffee...

The guys may bring more to this. Good luck!
