Eric, Why wait for your employer to pay for your own education? When you were at school (college / university) who was paying for your education? You or your parents, right?, no employer.
Take it on yourself to get (and choose) your own 'continuing' education. For my very first COMMON, I told my boss I would be 'off' during that week. I told him "take it the way you want: vacations or leave of absence, I'll be at COMMON" I added: "And I won't ask you for anything, so I'll learn whatever I want". When he realized I was serious, he then offered to pay for 'some' of my expenses. He also realized it could only profit the company as I would be more knowledable. I could tell you that first week was one of the most exciting week I had, I was at COMMON from 7:30am to midnight, Sunday to Friday of that week. What a week!
That was in 1989 and I still attend COMMON at least once a year, sometimes twice!
Eric, take YOUR future in YOUR hands, go for it, you won't regret it.As for vacations time, that's what my wife and I do when I (we) go to COMMON. Get there early (Saturday before the conference) and leave as late as possible (Sunday afternoon after the confernce). I sign her as a guest so she can walk around the conference at ease, come to opening & closing sessions, CUDS and few other events. She tours the city area while I attend sessions. We do our things during the day and meet after for dinner. My wife loves it as well, she often reminds me to "book for COMMON" until I do.
So Eric, will we see you in Orlando? - Great place for familly vacations - COMMON is great too!.
