You've got several factors going: 1. Mirroring is faster at writes than RAID5. Reads in general won't befaster but probably won't be slower by a measureable difference.
It was always my understanding that just the opposite was true. Every write involves writing to two disks instead of one, while a read from a mirrored set will read from whichever disk is least busy. A read should be faster by far than a write.
