It used to be that the system attention light indicated a serious issue that should be, at the least investigated, if not resolved promptly. That was in the Sys34, Sys36 and earlier AS/400 days. Now, I've been told, with our i5 model 520 the bar has been lowered to what triggers the system attention light to come on. Tape drive faults and console issues have caused the light to come on for us. I don't think it always means a very serious issue exists but it could. It used to feel like a hit to the solar plexus when we saw the light on in the past. I thinking those lights last FOREVER. We had on one a 620 and I can't even remember what it was (no big deal I remember) and it stayed on for months. Sort of like the idiot lights on cars. Had the Check Engine light on one a few years back and took it into the dealer and they said (at least on that model car) that the ONLY reason the Check Engine light came on was for emissions stuff and had nothing to do with the engine. It was going to cost a fortune to fix and wouldn't cause any problems so we (the mechanic and me) decided it wasn't worth fixing. SAL had a few items in, all from the day the machine was being first installed. None had occurred lately, so I'm not too bothered - and the light is now off.
