subject: EDI element separator character

Anybody know what is involved with changing the EDI "element separator"
character ?
I was hoping to change the * to something like ^

I'm working with an older translator package (Premenos/Harbinger/Inovis
Trustedlink), and can see the specification of the control characters on
the outgoing (send) Trading Partner Relationship setup. However the
inbound (receiving) setup screen does not show these control
characters. Is this because the actual control characters used in
formatting the data are defined in the envelope ?
