I've not had to deal with this much, if at all. I used to work for a company that installs fire sprinkler systems. I never paid too much attention to our own systems. The computer room had a single AS/400 in it, on a carpet, next to a door that opened on a warehouse, etc. Not the optimum environment, I suppose.

So I recommend contacting your local government health & safety agency - I suspect there are standards that might differ by geographical location and other local conditions.

I did a google on "fire protection computer room" and came up with lots of stuff. Here is a link to the Canadian "Fire Protection Standard for Electronic Data Processing Equipment"

http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pubs_pol/hrpubs/TBM_119/3-3_e.asp

Having said that, I seem to remember something about a very fine mist system using minimal quantities of water, with minimal damage to precious equipment and artifacts. But these are not recommended, at least by one manufacturer, for electronic data processing applications, since they can't penetrate the way HALON and other gaseous systems can.

I believe IBM also has recommendations for physical planning online, say at InfoCenter somewhere, that could help.

I recently had a request from an associate asking for some ideas behind
securing adequate fire prevention inside their computer room area. A dozen
years ago or more I remember HALON as a solution but I have no clue if that
is still within standard fire code or environmental laws...or, for that
matter, if it is even used anymore. I have not had to address the question
in a very long time and would greatly appreciate any input on the subject.
