You left out a few steps:
Modify everytime IBM comes out with a new release and changes the layout 
of the printout.
Keep multiple versions on hand for when your production partition version 
is one behind the development partition.
Decide to fix this the right way and use QUSLJOB.

  do a wrkactjob to *output
  parse *output for the job you care about into a file
  check # of records in parsed file
    if not zero your job is running
