Also Leaving MidRange Equipment

To all:

Today is also the last day the 820 is the production server here.  About a year 
ago the CFO determined we needed different ERP software & on Monday 2/7/05 we 
go live with M$ Axapta running on SQL server.  All the servers are IBM X series 
in an IBM rack.

My tenure with IBM equipment & programming goes back to 6/6/66 & the unit 
record equipment (a pair of 402's, 602 calculating punch, the high speed card 
sorter (1000 cards a minute - don't remember the number, & a collator) days.  
Next came the 360, then various System/3's, then the System/34, then the 
System/36, & for the last 17+ years various models of the AS/400.  I was 
working for an IBM VAR & ended up in Rochester for two weeks converting our 
software before the AS/400 was announced. The only machine I missed was the 
System/38 & management was happy with what we had so no upgrading.

I also would like to thank all that helped me with questions.  I was more of a 
lurker but I also gleaned a lot of information from this & other lists that 
David runs.  The only one I have kept is the PC Tech list.  Some days the 
volume on Midrange-L was staggering but I at least looked at the headers to see 
if it was of interest.

It is now on to SQL 2000 & all it's nuances.  Can't look back because I don't 
have time.  I will still get to work with the 820 because I have historical 
data that I need to migrate into SQL but it is not the PRIMARY server & for 
that I am sad.  The thought of retiring was there but I guess I look at this as 
a heck of a challenge.  A DBA is a pipe dream but just getting comfortable with 
SQL is a definite reality.  I have vendors I can call if things really get bad.

So, I need to sign off & do the last of the data conversions to our new 
software.  This weekend is going to get rather hectic but it's a job & it's 
time to get busy.  Almost drug out my bike this afternoon & went for a ride - 
getting into the 40's today & the snow is melting fast.  Come on spring.
