We use the www.zipcodedownload.com data for several "Dealer Locator" applications. You know, the "Find locations w/in xxx miles of zip code" kinds of thing. I haven't run millions of addresses through it, but so far so good. Keep in mind however, all you're buying is the zip code data, a raw CSV (or fixed width, or tab delimited, etc.) file. There is no application logic to go with it. For a little more you can get something like WorksRight, which, IIRC includes the application logic to do stuff with the data. If the difference is ~$350 what's it going to cost you to write the code yourself? I can assure you that none of the samples on the zipcodedownload.com site are written in RPG or Cobol. <G> -Walden ------------ Walden H Leverich III President & CEO Tech Software (516) 627-3800 x11 WaldenL@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.TechSoftInc.com Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur. A competitor, http://www.zipwise.com offers a similar product in two flavors, $15 and $39. For the price of these, I don't see how you can go wrong really. Originally zip codes were handed out to mostly "states", but later some unused zip codes originally assigned one state were reassigned to another state (Virginia, Maryland, DC area is one example) Also, we are not the only country in the world with 5 digit zip codes (I know we truly have a 5 +4 system, but lots of software deals with only the 5). jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sannan Solberg" <SSolberg@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Midrange Systems Technical Discussion" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, August 18, 2004 5:53 PM Subject: RE: City/State/County Info by Zip Codes > Thanks for all the replies. My main need for it has to do with getting the County info "by zip code" so we can update our customer database. The "sales people" do things by County and we don't currently have that info on the customers. Only addresses. We will not be doing any validation (but we could). The reason I'm not worried about keeping it updated "regularly" is that I can regularly check for customers without a county on their record, check the zip and if it is new, find out the info from the USPS site and add it to my table. We're not talking about "hundreds of thousands" of customers either, just a couple hundred new ones per year and a majority of them would already be residing in zip codes we would (hopefully) have. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Steve Morrison [mailto:smorrison@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] > Sent: Wednesday, August 18, 2004 3:36 PM > To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion > Subject: RE: City/State/County Info by Zip Codes > > > I think you will need to be able to update your ZIP Code database, at least > annually.
