Don't know about device allocation for spooling. Has anyone run a different subsystem for printing? I suppose it's possible. But there is nowhere in the SBSD to specify print device names.

Spool doesn't use the device name. It uses the print writer name. STRPRTWTR submits a job using the QSPLPRTW job description. This has a job queue of QGPL/QSPL which in turn is associated with the QSPL subsystem. That's how print writers end up in QSPL. You could change the job description and specify a different job queue, or associate the job queue with a different subsystem but why on earth would you want to? Besides, it would be a global change and I don't see the difference between running all print writers in QSPL and running them all in MYSBS.
