Don't know about device allocation for spooling. Has anyone run a different 
subsystem for printing? I suppose it's possible. But there is nowhere in 
the SBSD to specify print device names.

The matter of hung devices can be handles by that call to some special 
program for releasing the lock on the device, IIRC.

So on anything further I speak mostly out of "I don't know"
