I set DHCP with Dynamic DNS up on a V5R1 test box to see how it operated and it worked a treat. To get it working I used the "iSeries IP Networks: Dynamic" redbook:

http://publib-b.boulder.ibm.com/Redbooks.nsf/9445fa5b416f6e32852569ae006bb65f/8f6b4c85d704a6fa85256d98005ecd2b?OpenDocument

It took me a bit of effort at the time (there were two drafts hanging around as I recall) but it would have to be less effort and more reliable than trying to piece together a hack to obtain the IP address short of changing where the conversation is initiated.

Regards
Evan Harris

Unfortunately, I've never used an iSeries for DHCP or DNS, so I don't know
what the exact configuration directives to set up DHCP & dynamic DNS are.
