Maybe this is just an isolated issue.  My Acer laptop, which has a
burner, didn't come with software.  I've got an old cranky Philips, as
well, but it doesn't work nearly as well.  And I'm waiting to purchase a
new drive because I want to get a DVD+-RW drive like the DRU500X. and
it's still a bit pricey (getting there, though).

All that being said, I did a lot of looking and there are two utilities
I found VERY hard (if not impossible) to locate free for Windows:
scanner software and burner software.  Probably because MOST hardware
comes with the software.  But for people who buy used hardware, that's
not always the case.  Or in my case, I just plain can't find the disks
for my ancient UMAX scanner.

So don't assume there are utilities.  I looked, and I didn't find any,
and I'm usually pretty good at scrounging on the Internet <grin>.
