And then remember that the error is complaining about a record which is *not*
yet in those fields because *GETIN occurs ahead of moving buffers to input
fields.

I don't see a solution other than Hans' alternate collating sequence for RPG, or
perhaps using a SQL view with a UDF to convert the first name field to
uppercase.  With DDS you can specify the index will be case insensitive, but the
data itself is not affected so RPG still sees the data as out of order.  I'm not
sure how you'd circumvent that in DDS, though a UDF could do it.
