Is anything truly a user based tool? Most of the battle is understanding the database. Think 3rd normal form vs data access. Basically this is handled one of several ways. - A set of join logical files, or SQL views are created to make this all easy to access. - Data is replicated in one big cluster, or data warehouse. - All tools are manipulated by someone in IS who sets them up and locks the user out of changing them. - All tools are manipulated by someone in IS who sets them up. If they want to make changes they copy and modify. - Intelligent users are empowered, and trained, on how to query the data directly. Classic example. Tie these BPCS files together: ECH - order header ECL - order line ESN - order notes IIM - Item master RCM - customer master and the list goes on and on... I tend to push the join logical, or view, to make this easier. If you don't solve this issue, how will the tool help you?
