<Not interested in commercial products for this issue> (This is NOT a question about how to email from the AS/400. We are already doing that. This question is specific to determining the requirements for an AS/400-created file that double-clicking on the attachment will automagically open it up in Excel.) Have a new application that will have the AS/400 sending an email with an attachment. The attachment will be a file created on the 400 and it needs to be in a format that will cause Excel to open it when the recipient clicks on it from the email. It would appear that tab-delimited format would be preferable to comma-separated values format because of the potential for commas in the data. Note, this will be an email opened on both Windows and Mac clients (Yes, the Mac clients have Microsoft Office installed). The archives mentions CPYTOIMPF can create a CSV file, and I see that you can specify the field delimiter, which defaults to a comma. I saw in the archives someone suggested using x'05' on this parameter to create a tab-delimited file, although there was confusion on whether it should be x'05' or x'09'. FWIW, we're on v4r5. Assuming that one of these creates the tab-delimited file, what file extension should we use in order to help Excel recognize it properly, without asking the user to specify "what kind of file is this?" factoids? TIA, Dan P.S. In my archive search, I came across a very funny thread about a "table saw shake" that I remember from a few years ago.
