I think you're heading for trouble there. FTP doesn't know anything about fields. It will convert from one character set to another, but that's not the same issue. You need to either convert everything to a text format before using FTP, or you can use a BINary FTP transfer and take care of character set translation yourself.

Can the VAX mount a NFS share? If so, you may be able to publish a database on the AS400 that you can access directly from the VAX. AS400 can mount an external NFS database too.
