If all the systems have internet access and you set up PTP VPN so all the
networks are bridged via VPN, create your APPC *anynet controllers and your
application will work as written. *anynet is very stable at V4R4 and V5R1.
(That is the mix that we are running in-house.) You can get rid of the dial
up SDLC. All the work will be handled at the network configuration side.
You only have to create the APPC controllers on each system once. Sockets
is as bullet-proof as you write it. IBM wrote the *anynet sockets to give
us the APPC/APPN in the internet world. It works.

This system was designed to be robust and fairly bullet-proof over the
existing SNA network. There is a master file on the central AS/400 that
designates which files need to be either sent or received daily to/from the
remote system, and it works either over a leased line environment OR it will
create the necessary Dial-up SDLC configuration objects, use them, and
delete them when finished.

They now want to perform this functionality via the internet over a VPN
connection.
