I looked through the various System Handbooks, which follow OS/400 and
hardware releases fairly well.  The first mention of the 6817 10k drives
was in the V4R4 edition.  The hardware announcement letter for the 7xx
series (199-191) notes that V4R3 is the minimum OS requirement for this
drive.

Your best bet for locating such information would be to look through the
hardware announcements at the URL below.  Take the announcement search
option:

You can also use the Sales Manual, which is the official
hardware/software manual for IBM equipment.  Searching can be difficult.
