My DHCP configuration is done by name, rather than IP address. The machine that's running the DHCP server just looks up the addr, then assigns that addr to the PC. The reason that this is nice for me is that when I set up a new PC, I only have to set up the IP address in one place (the DNS zone file) I agree with you about using DNS files instead of a spreadsheet to keep track of IPs, though. I really don't understand why you'd use a spreadsheet... if it ever got out of date, it would create confusion and possibly (human) errors. It's much better to use just use the dns files as a reference, or even just do an DNS lookup if you need the address of something.
