This is the Firewall Salesman's sales spiel. I've heard it ad nauseum.
What are the facts?

(the best firewalls seem to be hardware appliances, not computer platforms
such as WinTel or *nix

Subject: RE: Firewall in AS400

As overseers of the technological assets, we are responsible for
protecting those resources, not just the iSeries (and other servers).
That is why a layered approach to security is necessary. The firewall
is just one element of a solid, layered security strategy. Protect the
server, protect the communications, protect the network and protect the
enterprise. If all your assets can be used by the public, than security
steps, such as a firewall, is not necessary. It's all a matter of what,
when and where protection is needed.

| Is that true? The answer is of course "Yes, dummy, its absolutlely

| essential." But what does it really do? Does it amount to anything

| useful

| from a security perspective?
